Phase 1

Between August 31, 2018 and May 10, 2019, I was part of an interdisciplinary team of students at MICA’s Center for Social Design, at the behest of the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office, that worked to address barriers for pedestrian and bike safety, in a predetermined area of Baltimore City.

Using a human-centered design approach, our team collaborated with pedestrians, bicyclists, and local organizations, to better understand the safety concerns of residents in and around the designated project area. After conducting primary and secondary research, we worked with community members to iterate and develop a series of low-fidelity prototypes. The final design solutions were implemented, tested, and critiqued by project stakeholders, ultimately to create a safer Baltimore for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The process and final implementation of this project was documented in a publication that I co-designed with team member, Noni Devora

Phase 2

I was hired on after the course by MICA Center for Social Design to continue on as a Graphic Designer for the Center for Social Design and Maryland Department of Transportation project team. I was tasked to further develop the Made You Look Brand that we created during Phase 1. The focus was to build on the research and prototype development completed in Phase 1 to further develop, test and evaluate low- and high-fidelity prototypes of intervention ideas in the new and expanded project area. The ultimate goal was to develop interventions and strategies that (1) change behaviors and/or the physical environment, (2) contribute to a safer and more livable community for people living, working, studying, or visiting the area, and (3) can be replicated to other areas of Maryland.
